Open Source BI

Open Source and BI is slowly starting to catch on. I've checked out a few of the tools, and I get asked about this every once in a while, so I keep a list handy. It's growing slowly, which is a good sign. It's also a sign that the BI market and data warehousing are mature. It's hard to commoditize something as complex as BI until the technologies are well understood.

First off is my list of a bunch of Open Source BI-related products. There's Mondrian, an open source OLAP server; there's the Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools (BIRT) eclipse project; JPivot, which provide a JSP OLAP front end and works with Mondrian; DeepGreen is a Postgres-based data warehouse database product; JasperReports is reporting software that can generate reports in HTML, PDF, XML and other formats.

Intelligent Enterprise, a magazine I wrote for a bunch of times, has a short article on OLAP and Open Source. He mentions some of these same programs. There's this "advisory", sort of an analyst's answer to the "should we use open source for BI" IT management question.

That should be enough to get you started investigating open source and BI.
